MEANING OF INTER-COMMUNAL RELATIONSHIP

WEEK 5-8

Relationship: Refers to the way in which two people, groups or countries behave towards each another or deal with each other.

Relationship is divided into two: (a) Intra and (b) Inter relationships.

  • Intra relationship: Is the interaction that exists within or inside an organization or society while
  • Inter-relationship: Is the interaction between one individual in an organization/environment and another individual in another organization/environment.

 

INTER-COMMUNAL RELATIONSHIP

Is a relationship which exists between two or more communities, they relate to contribute to the peaceful and harmonies development of the society/communities and bring people of the various communities together.

IMPORTANCE OF INTERCOMMUNAL RELATIONSHIP

  • Promotion of peace and unity - positive inter-communal relationship will promotes peaceful situation and environment coupled with the abilities of uniting the community members together.
  • Enhancement of security – It is the duty of a positive inter-communal relationship to enhance and ensure stable security consciousness in their communities. This will help to remove the fear of violence, war of any kind between the communities involved.
  • Promotion of inter-communal/tribal marriage - Inter-communal relationship will promote tribal marriage by allowing the citizens and community members to marry from their neighboring communities.
  • Promotion of political development – It promotes political development of different kinds and ensures that concerned communities participate in issues related to political enhancement in their various communities.
  • Promotion of economic progress – A responsible and positive inter-communal relationship will enhance peaceful atmosphere and strategies for each other business like inter-marketing strategies, inter-agricultural strategies etc.

SKILLS NEED FOR RESOLVING INTER-COMMUNAL COMFLICTS

  • The law court: Inter-communal conflicts can be resolve through the law court by using legal method. Any community that felt cheated can present her case to court.
  • Dialogue: The opposing communities can meet to map out how to resolve difference or disputes between them.
  • Mediation: Government can set up special panel to mediate between communities in conflicts.
  • Community Leaders: Communal conflicts can be resolve by the leaders of the various communities like Oba’s, Obi’s, Emirs, Chiefs etc.
  • Peace Keeping Force: Special peace keeping force like army, air force, navy, mobile police etc. can be especially set up by government to restore peaceful situation in the communities.

Meaning Of Inter-personal Relation: Inter-personal relationship is the interaction that exists between persons in a social setting or in an organization or institution. Or it is a mutual or cordial relationship that exists between people despite race, age, colour, and tribe, political, social or religious affiliation.

N/B: It can be regulated by custom, law, mutual agreement.

TYPES OF INTER-PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP

  • Relationship among peers: Peers here means persons who have the same social status as you i.e. your play mates, age groups, classmates etc.
  • Relationship between man and woman: Man here refers to adult male capable of performing functions like economic, cultural, social and political spheres of life. While woman here refers to an adult female who is mature enough to perform the same function. The relationship that exist between them might start with romance during courtship which may eventually leads to marriage after each has become saturated with love.
  • Relationship between individual and government. They are several ways through which an individual relates with the government in order to fully enjoy the rights and privileges of a citizen or as a stranger residing in the country i.e. individuals performs the following functions: (a) payment of tax (b) voting during election  (c) loyalty  to the leaders (d) partnership with the police. i.e. Government also performs the following functions: (a) Protection of life and property  (b) Defence   (c) Provision of social services  (d) Provision of employment
  • Relationship that exist between man and God. This is the relationship that exist between you and your creator.
  • Relationship that exist between same gender i.e. Man and man, woman and woman.
  • Platonic relationship – Is the relationship that exist among youth of nowadays, no intention of getting marry to one another.

SKILLS THAT PROMOTE INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP

  • Honesty- it is the attribute of being truthful, sincere, straight forward in one’s dealings with each other in the society.
  • Tolerance- Is the ability of an individual or groups to accept others opinions or behaviour that you may not agree with or people who are not like you. i.e. accommodating people’s short-comings or weakness.
  • Kindness- It means treating people with consideration, i.e. being kind/good to people.
  • Caring: It is the quality of being helpful or nice to others.
  • Patience – It means to stay calm and accept a delay or something annoying without complaining.
  • Forgiveness: Is the ability of one or an individual to forgive one another
